Jack Latham came to talk to us during the beginning of our 3rd year to talk about his project “Sugar Paper Theories” , his time at uni and the beginnings of his projects.
He began university in 2009, studying in Newport. He originally came from Cardiff. His main ambitions were to be some form or war photographer, soon after starting university, he found that this was not what he wanted to do.
His first project was of a clown by the name of Ozone, he photographed him a lot over the Christmas period and much of December. He hated this work by the end of it, and said that he was ashamed with himself. He had moved in with this man for a period of time and took photographs of this heroin addict for personal gain. From this he moved onto his second project, which was simply taking photographs of places there had been fights in Cardiff. Almost like crime scene images.
One of his photographic idols had sadly passed away in 2011, Jack’s 2nd year of university. He struggled immensely with the loss of this great war photographer and spent much of his time just wandering about and not really photographing anything. The images he did take however began much more conceptual than realistic.
Soon he moved on from the loss and from war photography in general. He began to focus much more on documentary photography and started the project ‘A Pink Flamingo’ (2012-2014). The symbolism of the pink flamingo was happiness and bringing joy back to America after the Wars. It was a series of images taken along the Oregon Trail, photographing many different types of houses and activities from the start to the finish of this trail. A lot of the images made it seem as if it were abandoned and full of ghost towns and motels, showing a very distinctive type of person throughout the project.
I personally really enjoyed the presentation and much of Jack’s work. Where I do not plan on being a documentary photographer in this sense, I can take a lot of inspiration and ideas from what we were shown.
